Brother’s QL-800 label printer range, which prints black and red thermal labels, has been recognised with the Innovation of the Year accolade at the 2017 European Office Products Awards (EOPA).
The award category recognises outstanding innovation and potential in a product, service, technology or process. The EOPA panel considered originality of the innovation, how it addresses a need, and expected or proven success in the market.
The QL-800 series is the world’s first* range of two-colour direct thermal label printers for office and home use. Print and technology specialist Brother launched the range in Europe in January 2017, with the line-up including the QL-800, QL-810W and QL-820NWB.
The label printers use special thermal media together with advanced electronics and software to precisely adjust the heat of the print head to produce black and red print without the need for additional ink or toner. Labels of up to 1 metre in length can be produced with a resolution of 300x300DPI at 176mm per second.
The range is ideal for busy offices requiring a high volume of labels with an element of visual differentiation through the use of black and red printing. The label printers can be used to:
- highlight certain office files for easy retrieval
- mark out allergens on food packaging
- draw attention to offers and promotions in a retail environment
- create highly visible indoor temporary signs
The range was designed to be simple to use, with buttons that are easy to push, a jam free label exit, a guillotine type automatic cutter and a large graphic LCD screen (on the flagship QL-820NWB). The QL-800 family is compatible with Mac and PC and meets the European Energy Star environmental standard.
The mid-spec QL-810W features Wireless LAN while the flagship QL-820NWB adds Bluetooth and Wired connectivity, as well as Made For iPod, iPhone and iPad compatibility (MFi), meaning it can paired with Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. Labels can be designed using P-touch Editor software and uploaded to the QL-820NWB to be reproduced without the need to be connected to a computer.
The judges praised the QL-800 range for representing a “true enhancement” of a product that’s already available and for supporting two-colour printing. They also noted the impressive growth opportunity and positive reseller feedback.
Brother International Europe said:
“We are delighted to receive the award for the trio of devices which were game-changing for Brother. We’re proud of the world-first credentials of the range and the class leading functionality it offers end users, and it’s satisfying to see this backed up by the industry.”
The awards presentation dinner was held in Amsterdam on 8 March as part of OPI’s Partnership event which brings together senior executives from Europe’s reseller and vendor communities.
